Counselling/Visiting
BEREAVEMENT COUNSELLING
This service aims to support those who have suffered a bereavement, and to assist them to come through the grieving process, taking into account their own individual situation and needs.
The bereavement programme covers the following:
- Getting to know the group (of other bereaved people)
- Dealing with being alone
- Dealing and coping with the process of grief
- Discovering and trusting yourself
- Our relationship with God and the Church.
- Follow-up group meetings.
You can help by being aware of members of the parish who have suffered bereavement. Lending a listening ear can help, bearing in mind that the grieving process can last for quite some time, depending on the individual. There may be ways in which you can help someone to cope better with being alone, by giving some practical help. Sometimes quite simple things can create a lot of worry for a bereaved person. There is a course organised once a year, usually on a Monday afternoon. For details contact Sister Thecla
GENERAL COUNSELLING
Some services are available through the Parish. If you feel you have a need for counselling, please contact Deacon Peter.
HOSPITAL VISITORS
The parish provides the Chaplaincy cover for Frenchay Hospital, which is part of a larger hospital trust. Sister Thecla is the main regular visitor for the whole hospital and takes Holy Communion to the sick. We have a small team which covers for her during any period when she is not available.
PARISH HOME VISITORS
The aim of this service is to offer a home visit to families who are new to the Parish, or entering a new phase (Example, Baptism of a child) to ensure they are aware of all that is available to them in the Parish. It is to make them aware of the activities in the Parish, to help them to make new friends and to encourage them to play a part in Parish life. It is to help them know that they are very welcome in the Parish, and valued as members of the Parish community.
A Parish visitor will offer a home visit at the convenience of the Parishioner. If you are interested in a home visit, or in helping with this service, contact the parish office.
PRISON VISITORS
The aim of this service is to fulfil the gospel message ‘I was in prison and you visited me.’
Ashfield Young Offenders Institute and Prison is situated in Pucklechurch. A team of six parishioners currently assists Deaon Michael in the work undertaken with young men aged 15 –18. Some join the young men for Mass on Fridays in the prison chapel, and others visit the prison wings on a Wednesday evening.
We also have pastoral responsibility for Catholics in the Vinney Green Secure Unit which houses boys and girls aged 10 to 16 who are too young to be sent to prison but have been placed in this unit by a court of law. If you are interested in visiting at either facility, contact Deacon Michael.
